First-time dads network over nappies at new baby group
Dad’s Group Inc was founded to give new fathers a place to connect with others going through the same experience.
Dads of Brunswick member Andrew Hardeman has a new baby with his second wife and told the Leader he remembered having little support in transitioning to fatherhood with his first children.
“There’s lots of mothers’ support, but not much father support,” Mr Hardeman said.
“First-time dads have a tendency to get lost in the whole ‘it’s mum’s experience’, but dads are also finding their place and trying to battle the pressures of work.”
The Dads of Brunswick group plans to meet for coffee regularly with fathers bringing their babies along for a chat and to make friends and connections with others going through the same experience.
“There’s an app, they can go to the local cafe for coffee, it’s very community-focused,” Mr Hardeman said.
“It’s an opportunity to give it a go, share their stories in an informal way that’s non-threatening.”
There are eight other groups already formed around Melbourne.
